So for all of us lowly folks who couldn't go to some event in California that has something to do with guitars, what are you up to?

-making fret leveling beam with piece of 16" aluminum I bought for $1

Work, unfortunately, but I did go to a Stradavarius exhibition in Oxford on Wednesday, so at least I got to ogle over some instruments! Very nice day.

And probably shelling out £30(!) for a leveling beam. I've spoken to metal workers around here before and they would barely give me the time of day let alone a piece of aluminium! Cheapest I seem to be able to get an offcut is not much more than £10 cheaper and not guaranteed to any accuracy!

Hopefully next weekend I'll start putting together my thickness sander.

I just got done setting up my 3rd guitar.its sounds pretty good I think.

Working on my new workshop. Found some woodworm in there, so I've had to spray the whole thing in woodworm killer before starting on the insulation. I'm going to Pembrokeshire county show in a couple of days where I'm hoping to pick up some machinery bargains and maybe do a bit of marketing.

Doing a little inlay for work for a customer, and making a jig for routing a FB extension pocket in an OM. Being unemployed has given me an opportunity to make some new vacuum fixtures for the CNC also, including a multi-chambered fretboard fixture, and one for machining necks.

Finishing up the mental work for two new one's. Semi-hollow baritone with beaver spine fretboard inlay and 5 string fretless bass with cocobolo neck and way too many fret lines.

Finishing the finish on the guitar I'm building for my grand daughter. It's based on the Torres SE117. Seems like I've been working on it forever. Has to be done for her birthday, Aug. 27. I'll post pictures when it's done.

Stopped in the middle of #15 to re-fret (bigger frets) and re-polish #7 which has been played hard for the last couple of years by it's owner (the guy who does all of my clips). Also re-polished the top of a Hippner, the second I've done. Interesting experience to work on another builders instrument.

I'm selecting and setting up a guitar to ship to Destroy All Guitars for Cliff's evaluation and possible consignment.

Somebody wish me luck. This is my first real foray into marketing them and the first true scrutiny they will have received. I've gotten some local praise from people whose opinion I trust but Cliff, the owner of DAG's, has been around the block a few times and moves in a much larger circle.

Finished up the uke... Decided to french polish it instead of lacquer... I don't need anymore lacquer fumes and neighbor complaints over it. I think in the future I will french polish any commissions I get and reserve lacquering for repair work.

I started building this one when my son was born. He'll be 4 in November. Not the quickest of paces. I finished constructing the body in about three months. The neck took me a few weekends. The rest of the time has been spent finishing, re-finishing, re-finishing and not looking at the guitar because I hate the finish. I think I'm about 90% there. Still have some spots that aren't quite level. I'm afraid to go at it much more. A sand through at this juncture would be crushing. Anyway, it looks pretty nice now. Had a hard time taking photos, actually. Although, I was using an iPhone. Honduran mahogany B & S. Adi top. Cocobolo binding. Quilted sapele purfling and rosette.

The top used to be a part of this old table top.



Underneath all that gunk was a nice piece of mahogany veneer.
Body is white ash, chambered, top is poplar with mahogany veneer.
Cherry neck w/ Granadillo fretboard and Yellow Siris headplate.

Its a guitar..... partscaster, actually its one of the nicest Strats I've ever picked up. I bought the body (Fender original replacement) from GC 14/15 years ago scratch n dent for $85.00, neck is an American deluxe I got from a guy at work, Klien S-7's (the Eric Johnson copy) Fender vintage trem off Ebay, Callaham trem block and arm, CTS pots and switch. Brian Parris did a wonderful wiring job and it sounds heavenly:) Ernie Ball slinkys, very rough set up, I'll be tweaking it for a couple of days.

Roasting in Austin, Texas!

I'm in the process of remodeling my house which will get me limited studio space (I'm a commercial photographer) and - get this - a real, climate-controlled (in Texas that means air-conditioned) place to build the occasional guitar. It has been over 100 every day since forever and I have six more weeks until I can go out in the garage to visit my band saw!

Roasting here too... Taiwan's climate is more like Southern Florida's climate.. very humid and hot.
